The Whip Inn is an editorial guide to the things that make a weekend in the English countryside worth getting out of bed for: a well-kept pint, a low-beamed pub with a real fire, a long walk over the chalk hills, and a plate of honest food at the end of it. We are not a listings site or a booking service — we are a slow, opinionated read about pub culture and the landscape that surrounds it.
Most of our attention falls on the Chilterns and the country pubs scattered across them, but the spirit travels wherever there is good ale and an unhurried afternoon to spend over it. We write about real ale without the jargon, about walks that end at a warm bar, and about the simple pleasures of pub food done properly — the roast, the ploughman's, the fish and chips that no fashion will ever improve.
Everything here is written and edited by James R. Whitfield, who has spent more years than he will admit walking the ridges, sampling the cask list and arguing the case for the unimproved Sunday roast. The aim is never to sell you anything, only to point you towards the good stuff and explain what makes it good.
